Plantar fasciitis

Under the sole of the foot runs a fascia, the plantar fascia, which supports the arch of the foot. When overloaded, tiny micro-tears can develop in the fibers of the plantar fascia.

Overload can arise in several ways, such as from excess weight, prolonged standing, or intense sports activities. It may also occur when the foot rolls too far inward during walking.

Many people with plantar fasciitis also have shortened calf muscles, which is certainly related. Symptoms may also appear without a clearly identifiable cause. Insoles or a brace can be very effective for complaints on the underside of the foot.
