What are pelvic pain and pelvic instability?
Pelvic pain is a general term for pain and discomfort occurring around the pelvis, pubic bone, hips, groin, buttocks, or lower back. The pain may develop gradually due to overuse or occur during or after pregnancy. Many people experience difficulty walking, climbing stairs, standing for long periods, turning over in bed, or performing everyday activities.
Pelvic instability occurs when the joints and ligaments of the pelvis do not provide sufficient stability. During pregnancy, hormonal changes cause the ligaments to become more flexible, allowing the pelvis to adapt for childbirth. This increased flexibility can result in excessive movement of the pelvic joints, leading to pain and instability. Although pelvic instability is commonly associated with pregnancy, it can also occur in men and non-pregnant women as a result of overuse, trauma, or sacroiliac (SI) joint problems.
The pelvis connects the spine to the legs. When this connection lacks stability, the surrounding muscles must work harder to keep the body balanced. This can lead to muscle fatigue, radiating pain, and reduced physical function. A pelvic brace supports the pelvic region, limits unwanted movement, and helps reduce the strain on muscles, tendons, and joints.
A pelvic brace is often used alongside physiotherapy, exercise therapy, and posture advice. By providing additional support to the pelvis, everyday activities can often be performed more comfortably and symptoms may be reduced. A proper diagnosis by a doctor or physiotherapist remains important to determine the underlying cause of the symptoms.
