Ankle

The ankle joint is a highly complex system. It is the part that connects the lower leg to the foot. In daily life, we use this joint constantly; from the moment we get out of bed, it is already being loaded. With every step we take, we use our ankle joint. This allows us to walk, stand, cycle, play sports, and more.

The ankle consists of various structures in and around the joint. Together, they enable us to make plantarflexion and dorsiflexion movements (stretching and bending) with the foot. You can also move the foot diagonally, which is known as supination and pronation (or inversion and eversion of the ankle). All these structures together provide the mobility and stability of the joint. However, pain or an injury to the ankle joint can be very troublesome. Such an injury can have various causes and may develop in different ways.
