The ProBrace ankle bandages are carefully selected and of a high quality. A well-fitting bandage for your ankle is very important to prevent pressure marks and irritations. Our ankle bandages are frequently used in sports such as football, hockey, tennis, badminton, volleyball and handball. You can also contact us for children’s bandages and bandages that are not related to sports. If you buy an ankle bandage at Probrace, you are assured of the best support for your ankle. ProBrace supplies bandages for every situation and age.

Ankle bandages that fit your complaint

Not every ankle bandage is suitable for your situation. An ankle bandage should fit perfectly and support the correct part of your foot / ankle. If you suffer from your Achilles tendon, instability of your ankle or continuous spraining of your ankle, a bandage for your ankle may be the solution. An ankle bandage is a good replacement for tape and gives your ankle a rest in case of edema or mild sprain.

A brief overview of the most common indications in which ankle bandages can be used:

  • Instability only
  • Prevention
  • Mild ankle sprain / ankle sprain
  • Achilles tendon irritation
  • Haircut irritation
  • Edema

Our ankle bandages are carefully selected

ProBrace stands for its quality bandages. Due to our experience from hospitals, rehabilitation centers and our own practice, we have a clear picture of the options we can offer you in the field of bandages. With all our products you can find a support class that shows the weight of support. If you decide to buy an ankle bandage on our site, we guarantee you the best possible quality.

An ankle brace or bandage for ankle sprain or ankle bruise

Ankle sprain and ankle bruise is the most common sports injury in the Netherlands (Schmikkli et al. Sports injuries in the total playing field, NOC NSF 2002).

The overview below shows which actions during sports are most provocative for the occurrence of sports injuries:

  • Running, sprinting, running 290,000
  • Jump 170,000
  • Contact opponent 290,000
  • Turn 130,000
  • Contact object 250,000

In the current KNGF (Royal Netherlands Society for Physiotherapists) guidelines, wearing a brace is recommended from the moment the swelling has subsided. The chance of a full recovery is greater if someone uses an ankle bandage for the first 6 weeks after injury. This results in a faster resumption of sports activity. However, wearing an ankle bandage does not guarantee injury-free sports. Preventive use of an ankle bandage significantly reduces the risk of repeated trauma. The EXO-L brace is a good example of this. A custom brace that can only be used preventively.

The ankle / foot is a very complex joint. Via the link below you can get a clearer picture of this joint.

Tape or ankle bandage?

The Royal Dutch Society for Physical Therapists has clear guidelines in the field of injuries and ankle complaints. When do therapists recommend an ankle bandage and when should you go for tape? Some therapists swear by a brace or bandage, others by tape. The Royal Netherlands Society for Physical Therapists has been able to create a clear picture of these two methods to be used by combining research with practical experience. Below is a brief overview of the pros and cons.

Brace

Tape

  • In the long term, a brace is cheaper than tape.
  • Within a few hours, a brace gives 4.5-12% less support due to the loosening effect. However, this is easily solved by tightening the brace.
  • Reduces the risk of recurrence of ankle sprain by 40-50%.
  • Depending on the brace, it hardly hinders the ‘normal’ movement.
  • The patient can easily put on and take off a brace.
  • A brace is sufficient when the comfort offered and the support given are in balance.
  • There are different types of bandages with different support classes.
  • In the long run, tape is a lot more expensive than a brace.
  • Tape provides 40-50% less support within a few hours due to the loosening effect.
  • Reduces the risk of recurrence of ankle sprain by 40-50%.
  • Obstructs 25% more the ‘normal’ movement of the ankle.
  • To apply sports tape, a professional often has to be involved. In addition, tape is more difficult to remove after the sport activity.
  • Tape can be adapted more easily and better to individual needs.
  • The use of glue increases the risk of skin irritation.

(Source: KNGF guideline)

A comparative study between an ankle brace or bandage and tape stands or falls with the type of tape or brace that has been used. After all, every brace has its own support class.

Do my ankle muscles weaken when wearing an ankle bandage?

It is a myth that wearing ankle tape or brace leads to muscle weakness in athletes. An average Dutch footballer only sports two to three a week. This is equivalent to being active for about 4-6 hours. While playing football, the tape or brace acts as an aid to avoid creating peak loads on the ankle straps, thereby preventing new ankle injuries. The muscles around the ankle are stimulated enough not to relax. Wearing a brace provides protection but does not immediately weaken the muscles.

Ankle bandage tips

  • We advise to wear a (sports) sock under the bandage, to protect the skin against possible stitching
  • Does your brace have velcro straps? Always close the Velcro strips after use to prevent tangles and contamination of the Velcro fasteners
  • Wash the ankle bandage by hand and let it air dry
