Tennis elbow

A tennis elbow is no fun and can often persist for a long time. A tennis elbow, also known as tennis arm or epicondylitis lateralis humeri, is a condition in which the outside of the elbow becomes painful. The pain may radiate to the forearm, wrist and hand. How do you recognise a tennis elbow, and what can be done about it?

What is tennis elbow?

Tennis elbow is a tendon injury on the outer side of the elbow where the forearm extensor muscles attach. Repeated strain or overuse can cause small tears in the tendons, leading to irritation and pain. This condition is not limited to tennis players; it also affects people who lift, twist, type, or perform manual tasks frequently. Pain is usually felt on the outside of the elbow and can radiate into the forearm and wrist.

Diagnosis of tennis elbow

The diagnosis is based on your symptoms and a physical examination. The doctor will press on the outside of the elbow and ask you to perform certain movements that may trigger pain. Imaging is usually not necessary unless other causes need to be ruled out.

Treatment and recovery of tennis elbow

Treatment involves rest, avoiding overuse, and applying ice or anti-inflammatory medication. A tennis elbow brace supports the tendons and reduces pain during movement. Exercises and physiotherapy are important for recovery; in persistent cases, an injection or surgery may be considered. Recovery usually takes several weeks to months, depending on severity and adherence to therapy.

What are the symptoms of a tennis elbow?

  • Pain on the outside of the elbow
  • Tenderness over the bony point on the outside
  • Pain when extending the wrist or gripping objects
  • Loss of strength in the hand or forearm
  • Stiffness or swelling around the elbow

Supportive brace for tennis elbow

A tennis elbow brace applies targeted pressure to the tendons on the outside of the elbow, reducing the strain on the irritated area. This helps decrease pain during movement and prevents overuse. The brace is comfortable, adjustable, and easy to wear during daily activities or sports.

Treating tennis elbow with a brace

Many people report significant relief of symptoms when combining specific exercises with the use of an elbow brace for tennis elbow (practice-based). Tennis elbow is best treated with eccentric exercises and an elbow strap. Simply taking prolonged rest usually has little effect. Wearing a tennis elbow brace can help reduce and relieve symptoms in everyday life.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tennis Elbow

How can you recover from a tennis elbow the fastest? +

The fastest way to recover is by combining targeted exercises (especially eccentric exercises), temporarily avoiding overuse, and wearing a tennis elbow brace. This helps relieve the tendons and speeds up recovery. Simply resting is usually not enough.

How can you test if you have a tennis elbow? +

Press on the outside of your elbow and extend your wrist against resistance; if this causes pain, there is a high likelihood that you have a tennis elbow. Pain when lifting an object with a straight arm also often indicates a tennis elbow. Always consult a doctor or physiotherapist if in doubt.

Where is the pain located in a tennis elbow? +

The pain is on the outside of the elbow, at the bony point where the forearm extensor muscles attach. It may radiate to the forearm, wrist, or even the hand and worsens when extending the wrist or gripping objects.

Is heat beneficial for a tennis elbow? +

Heat can help relax the muscles around the elbow and improve blood flow, which can sometimes provide relief. It does not treat the inflammation itself but can be soothing for stiff or tense muscles.
