Clavicle fracture

A broken collarbone is one of the most common fractures in the human body. The clavicle connects the shoulder, shoulder blade and breastbone. Beneath the collarbone lie nerves and blood vessels that are protected by this bone.

The clavicle, also known as the “clavicula” in Latin, can break after a fall. The clavicle lies close to the skin and is easy to see and feel in many people. It sits at shoulder height and resembles a rib. The clavicle provides stability for the shoulder and helps transfer force through the arm. In addition, a fracture of the clavicle can compromise the protection of the nerves and blood vessels located directly underneath.
