A ski thumb is very common and can be caused by overload or a trauma. If not immediately medically mediated, instability of the lower thumb joint (first joint of the thumb) can occur. What is a ski thumb?
With a ski thumb, the ligament (ligament) that can be found on the inside of the thumb rips or stretches. This ligament, together with other ligaments, ensures the stability of the lower joint of the thumb. When this ligament is damaged, the joint can become unstable. About 10% of all ski accidents involve this injury because the strap around the ski pole gives a short tug on the thumb. Hence the name ski thumb! Rigid or elastic thumb braces for osteoarthritis or rheumatism
