An umbilical hernia belt is worn when you suffer from an umbilical hernia or abdominal hernia (also called an abdominal wall hernia). This belt supports you during recovery after surgery or in the period leading up to surgery. Of course, an umbilical hernia belt can also be worn if you are not undergoing surgery. This is referred to as preventive use (to prevent the condition from worsening).
The umbilical hernia belt supports your abdominal wall when there is weakness around the navel. The belt can help push the hernia back into place, reducing discomfort. In most cases, an umbilical hernia is not painful, but it is visible—something most people find undesirable. By wearing an umbilical hernia belt, the hernia becomes less visible or disappears. Because the belt is usually elastic, it can be easily adjusted independently to your preferred fit. The belt can also be used for an incisional hernia.
A high-quality umbilical hernia belt provides the support you need to speed up the healing of your umbilical hernia or incisional hernia and to keep it from being visible. Any pain and/or discomfort will also decrease. The belt can be used for small hernias in the early stages as well as for more developed hernias where the bulge is already visible.
If desired, the included silicone pad (a cushion that applies pressure to a specific area) can be used with the umbilical hernia belt. This pad is covered with terry cloth. Thanks to the pad, the belt delivers targeted compression and speeds up the recovery process. The pad can be easily attached or removed using the Velcro. An umbilical hernia belt is also effective without the pad. Without it, the belt provides constant, even pressure across the entire area.
