Injuries: From Cause to Recovery

Injuries: From Cause to Recovery

Injuries can occur at any age. Whether you play sports, have a sedentary job, or are simply busy with family life, one awkward movement or repeated strain can be enough to cause pain. In this article, we explain what an injury is, how it develops, the different types of injuries, and what you can do to prevent problems or recover as quickly as possible.

What is an injury?

An injury is damage to the body. In most cases, it affects a muscle, tendon, ligament, bone, or joint that has become overloaded or has been subjected to an impact. Symptoms often include pain, stiffness, swelling, or difficulty moving normally. Some injuries occur suddenly, for example after a misstep or sprint. Others develop gradually. You may first notice mild discomfort, take it easy for a while, but eventually the symptoms continue to worsen. This is common in people who repeatedly perform the same movements or remain in the same position for extended periods.

Different types of injuries

Injuries vary greatly in severity and location. A muscle tear feels very different from an overused tendon or a sprained ankle. Muscle injuries often occur during explosive movements, while tendon injuries are more common when a joint is subjected to prolonged strain. Joint injuries, such as a rolled ankle or a knee that gives way, are particularly common among athletes.

Bone bruises and fractures usually result from accidents or falls. Although every type of injury requires a different recovery approach, they all have one thing in common: the sooner you know what is wrong, the sooner the right treatment can begin.

How does an injury develop?

There is rarely a single clear cause. Most injuries result from a combination of factors, such as increasing activity too quickly, insufficient warm-up, fatigue, inappropriate footwear, instability following a previous injury, or simply making one wrong step. People who spend long hours at a desk often develop injuries due to repetitive movements. Think of a wrist irritated by typing or a neck that becomes painful after hours behind a laptop.

Common injuries

In sports, the most common injuries include ankle sprains, knee injuries, and muscle strains. People with desk jobs more commonly experience wrist, neck, and shoulder complaints. Back pain deserves a category of its own, as almost everyone experiences it at some point. The causes range from overuse to stress.

The most severe injuries

The impact of an injury depends on its location, severity, and how much it limits your daily activities. For many people, a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the most serious injuries, requiring months of rehabilitation. A ruptured Achilles tendon also involves a lengthy recovery and can significantly affect mobility. Severe back conditions, such as a herniated disc, or a shoulder that repeatedly dislocates can also have a major impact on daily life. Recovery from complex fractures depends on the extent of the injury and the treatment required.

Recovering from an injury

Recovery rarely requires complete rest. In most cases, controlled movement is more beneficial than total inactivity. A physical therapist can guide you with exercises aimed at improving mobility, strength, and stability. Sometimes additional support is needed. A brace can help stabilize a joint or temporarily reduce stress, allowing you to move more safely. Examples include wrist braces for overuse injuries, ankle or knee braces after a sports injury, or a back brace to improve posture.

Rest remains important, but only when combined with a gradual return to activity. Trying to do too much too soon is one of the most common reasons for re-injury.

How can you prevent injuries?

Preventing injuries starts with paying attention to your body. A proper warm-up, varied movement, and gradually increasing your workload can make a significant difference. Fatigue, stress, and poor footwear play a greater role than many people realize. Sometimes additional support is beneficial. Correcting foot alignment with orthotic insoles, for example, may help reduce strain on the knees and ankles. This is also explained in the orthotic insoles brochure, which describes how orthotics can improve the alignment of the musculoskeletal system.

A preventive brace may also be beneficial if you have chronic ankle instability or have experienced previous sports injuries.

Frequently asked questions about injuries

How do I know if I can treat my injury myself or if I should see a doctor?

Many injuries can initially be treated with rest, controlled movement, and avoiding painful activities. If your symptoms improve within a few days, you can gradually resume light exercises and slowly increase your activity level. However, if the pain worsens, significant swelling develops, you lose function immediately, or you heard or felt a popping sensation when the injury occurred, you should consult your doctor, physical therapist, or orthopedic specialist. Professional advice is also recommended if your symptoms show little or no improvement after one to two weeks.

How long does it usually take to recover from an injury?

Recovery time depends entirely on the type and severity of the injury and how quickly appropriate treatment begins. A mild muscle strain may improve within a few days, while a tendon injury can take weeks or even months to heal completely. Ankle sprains often require at least four to six weeks, especially when instability is present. More complex injuries, such as ACL tears or Achilles tendon ruptures, often require several months of rehabilitation.

Can a brace speed up recovery or help prevent injuries?

A brace can help stabilize a joint, reduce overload, or temporarily limit certain movements. This allows irritated or damaged tissues to recover while enabling you to remain safely active. However, a brace is not a complete treatment by itself. It is primarily a supportive aid that contributes to comfort, stability, and safety throughout the recovery process.

How should I package my product to return it? +

Use sturdy packaging, preferably the original shipping box in which you received your order. This minimizes the risk of damage and allows us to make someone else happy with the product. After it has been returned, the item must still be suitable to be offered as a new product.

Never use the product’s own packaging as the shipping box! If the product packaging becomes damaged, replacement costs may be charged.

What are the return conditions for returning a product? +

Return Conditions

  1. If reasonably possible, the product must be returned in its original condition and undamaged, in the most original and undamaged product packaging.
  2. It must be reasonably possible to resell your returned item without any additional handling.
  3. The product packaging may never be used as the shipping box. There must always be an extra outer shipping box around the product to prevent damage to the product and/or its packaging. You can use the shipping box we originally used to send the product to you.

How can I exchange my product for another product or size? +

Would you like to exchange the product for another size or a different product?
You can easily use our exchange service. Please follow the steps below:

  1. Go to our returns portal and indicate which product you would like to exchange.
  2. Next, select the size or the alternative product you would like to receive in exchange for your current product. For this step you will need your order number (including the letters ORD..) and your postal code. You can find these details on the packing slip.
  3. After you have indicated which product you would like to exchange and what you would like to receive in return, you can choose a return label from a carrier at a reduced rate.

Once you have purchased the return label, you will receive it by e-mail.

  • If you selected a printable return label, please print the label and attach it to the outside of the shipping box.
  • If you selected a non-printable return label, you do not need to print anything. Simply take your parcel to a parcel shop and have the QR code or barcode from the document in the e-mail scanned. The employee at the parcel shop will print the label for you and attach it to the box.

Important: always keep the drop-off receipt until your return has been fully processed. This serves as proof that you handed over the parcel.

Once we have received your return, we will process it as soon as possible (within a maximum of 5 working days). After processing your return, you will receive a new order confirmation containing the product you exchanged your original item for.

For the first exchange, no additional shipping costs will be charged. This order confirmation also confirms that your return has been successfully processed.

As soon as you receive this confirmation and the product is in stock (if a product is not in stock, it will be indicated with the word “backorder” on the product page), your order will be collected by the carrier the same day at 17:00 (5 PM).
