DonJoy Nextep Xcel Long Air Walker Boot – Firm immobilisation of the foot, ankle and lower leg

Do you have a serious ankle injury, foot injury or a stable fracture where movement needs to be restricted as much as possible for a period of time? The DonJoy Nextep Xcel Air Walker is a sturdy pneumatic walking boot that surrounds the foot, ankle and a large part of the lower leg with a fully enclosing rigid shell. This firm shell significantly limits unwanted movement and provides additional stability and protection around the injured area.

This gives the walker a high level of stability and protection for conditions including severe ankle sprains, stable ankle fractures, fractures of the lower part of the lower leg and during recovery after surgery or trauma. The fully enclosing shell provides support all around, while the soft brushed nylon and foam lining comfortably surrounds the leg. Ventilation at the rear helps remove heat and moisture during prolonged wear. The curved non-slip sole also supports a controlled and natural rolling motion from heel to toe.

Large adjustable air cell for additional support

The DonJoy walker boot has one large inflatable air cell on the inside. Inflating it allows the walker to fit more securely around the ankle and lower leg. Air can easily be added or released, allowing the fit and level of support to be adjusted throughout recovery.

Firm full-shell protection with a comfortable rolling motion

The long DonJoy walker extends to just below the knee and therefore stabilises not only the foot and ankle, but also a larger part of the lower leg. The four adjustable straps provide a firm and even fit: one strap across the forefoot, one around the ankle and two around the lower leg. The rotating buckles make the straps easy to open and close. At the front, a flexible toe guard helps protect the toes from impact, while the sturdy non-slip sole provides additional grip while walking.

What is the difference between the short and long DonJoy Nextep Xcel Air Walker?

The DonJoy Nextep Xcel Air is available in both a short and long version. The short walker mainly stabilises the foot, midfoot and ankle and is suitable when the injury is primarily located in this area, for example with a stable foot fracture, stress fracture or severe midfoot sprain.

The long walker extends to just below the knee and therefore also supports the lower part of the lower leg. This version is more suitable when, in addition to the foot and ankle, the lower leg also needs additional stabilisation, for example with certain ankle fractures, a fracture of the lower part of the lower leg or after surgery. In the case of a fracture or serious injury, always follow the advice of your doctor or healthcare professional.

Contraindications

Do not use the Air Walker if your doctor or healthcare professional has prescribed a different form of immobilisation or if the injury is not suitable for treatment with a walker. In the case of a fracture, severe sprain, Achilles tendon rupture or after surgery, always use the DonJoy Nextep Xcel Air according to the advice of your doctor or healthcare professional.

Walk more comfortably with an EvenUp shoe lift

A walker has a thicker sole than a regular shoe. This can temporarily create a difference in leg length while walking, which may place extra strain on the knee, hip or lower back. With an EvenUp shoe lift under the shoe of the opposite leg, you can reduce this height difference and often walk more evenly.

Frequently asked questions

When do you use a walker boot?+

A walker boot is used when the foot, ankle or lower part of the lower leg needs to be firmly stabilised for a period of time and movement needs to be restricted as much as possible. The DonJoy Nextep Xcel Long Air Walker is suitable for conditions including severe ankle sprains, stable ankle fractures, certain stable lower leg fractures, after surgery and for an Achilles tendon rupture.

Is a walker suitable for a broken ankle?+

A walker can be used for certain stable ankle fractures. The rigid shell limits movement of the foot and ankle and helps protect the injured area during recovery. Whether a walker is suitable depends on the type of fracture and how stable it is. Therefore, always use a walker for an ankle fracture according to the advice of your doctor or healthcare professional.

Can you walk with a walker boot?+

This is possible in many situations. The DonJoy Nextep Xcel Air has a curved non-slip sole that supports a controlled rolling motion while walking. How much weight you may place on the affected leg depends on your injury and treatment plan. In some cases, crutches may also be needed temporarily.

How tight should a walker boot fit?+

A walker should fit securely without causing painful pressure. Your foot and ankle should be well stabilised, but you should not experience tingling, numbness, discolouration or cold toes. The inflatable air cell allows you to adjust the fit of the DonJoy Nextep Xcel Air throughout recovery.

When should you choose a long walker instead of a short walker?+

A long walker is particularly suitable when, in addition to the foot and ankle, the lower part of the lower leg also needs extra stabilisation, for example with certain ankle fractures, a stable fracture just above the ankle or after surgery. A short walker is more compact and is mainly used when the injury is located around the foot, midfoot or ankle.
