DonJoy Nextep Xcel Short Air Walker Boot – immobilisation of the foot

Do you have a foot injury where movement needs to be restricted as much as possible for a period of time? The DonJoy Nextep Xcel Short Air Walker Boot is a compact walking boot with a rigid outer shell that surrounds and protects the foot. The short walker is used for conditions including stable foot fractures, metatarsal fractures, stress fractures and severe foot sprains.

Because the walker has a short design, support is mainly concentrated around the foot. This makes it particularly suitable for injuries to the toes, forefoot and midfoot where firm immobilisation is required. Examples include a fracture of a metatarsal bone or a foot injury where walking in a regular shoe is temporarily not possible.

The soft nylon and foam lining prevents direct contact with the rigid shell and provides a comfortable fit. A flexible toe guard is positioned at the front. The firm non-slip sole provides additional grip while walking.

Difference between the short and long DonJoy Nextep Xcel Air Walker

The DonJoy Nextep Xcel Air is available in both a short and long version. The short walker mainly stabilises the foot, midfoot and ankle and is suitable when the injury is primarily located in this area. Examples include a stable foot or metatarsal fracture, a stress fracture or a severe midfoot sprain.

The long walker extends to just below the knee and therefore also supports a larger part of the lower leg. This version is more suitable when, in addition to the foot and ankle, the lower part of the lower leg also needs firm stabilisation, for example with certain ankle fractures or a stable fracture of the lower part of the lower leg. In the case of a fracture or serious injury, always follow the advice of your doctor or healthcare professional.

Air chamber for a secure fit

A large inflatable air cell is located on the inside of the DonJoy Nextep Xcel Air Walker. The integrated pump allows you to easily add air. If the walker feels too tight, air can also be released again.

This allows you to adjust the fit throughout recovery. This is particularly useful when the amount of swelling in the foot changes. The air chamber helps keep the foot securely positioned inside the walker without having to overtighten the straps.

Three adjustable straps

The short walker is secured with three adjustable straps. One strap runs across the forefoot, while the other straps help keep the walker securely in place. Thanks to the rotating buckles, the straps are easy to open, tighten and readjust.

Rocker sole for walking with a walker

The underside of the DonJoy Nextep Xcel Air has a rounded rocker sole. This shape helps the foot roll through during walking while keeping the foot itself as stable as possible. The non-slip layer underneath the sole provides additional grip.

Whether and how much weight you may place on the foot while wearing the walker depends on your foot injury. In the case of a fracture or after surgery, always follow the weight-bearing advice of your doctor or healthcare professional.

When do you use the DonJoy Nextep Xcel Short Air Walker?

  • Forefoot or midfoot fractures

Contraindications

Do not use the Air Walker if your doctor or healthcare professional has prescribed a different form of immobilisation or if the injury is not suitable for treatment with a walker. In the case of a fracture, severe sprain or other serious foot or ankle injury, always use the DonJoy Nextep Xcel Air according to the advice of your doctor or healthcare professional.

Walk more comfortably with an EvenUp shoe lift

A walker has a thicker sole than a regular shoe. This can temporarily create a difference in leg length while walking, which may place extra strain on the knee, hip or lower back. With an EvenUp shoe lift under the shoe of the opposite leg, you can reduce this height difference and often walk more evenly.

Frequently asked questions

When should you choose a long walker instead of a short walker?+

A long walker is particularly suitable when, in addition to the foot, the ankle also needs extra stabilisation, for example with certain ankle fractures, a stable fracture just above the ankle or after surgery. A short walker is more compact and is mainly used when the injury is located around the forefoot or midfoot.

Is this walker suitable for a metatarsal fracture?+

Yes, the DonJoy Nextep Xcel Short Air Walker can be used for certain stable fractures of the forefoot and metatarsal bones. The rigid shell limits movement of the foot and helps protect the injured area during recovery. Always use a walker for a fracture in accordance with the advice of your doctor or healthcare professional.

Can a walker help with a stress fracture of the foot?+

Can you walk with the DonJoy Nextep Xcel Short Air Walker?+

The walker is designed to support controlled walking during recovery. The curved non-slip sole helps the foot roll through more naturally and provides extra grip while walking. How much weight you may place on the affected foot depends on your injury. If the difference in height causes problems, this can easily be compensated for with the EvenUp shoe lift on the unaffected side.
