Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Brace Advice

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is an inherited connective tissue disorder in which the body’s connective tissue is weaker than normal. Connective tissue plays an essential role in providing strength and stability to joints, skin, muscles, and ligaments. When this tissue is weakened, it can lead to joint instability, pain, and fatigue. In this article, we explain how EDS affects daily life and how compression garments and braces may help provide support.

Life Expectancy with EDS

For most people with EDS, life expectancy is normal. This is especially true for the hypermobile type, which is the most common form. However, symptoms can have a significant impact on daily activities and physical capacity. Rare forms, such as vascular EDS, require close medical monitoring because of the increased risk of blood vessel and organ complications.

Treatment and Recovery Options

EDS cannot be cured because it is a genetic condition. Treatment therefore focuses on reducing symptoms and preventing excessive strain. With appropriate guidance, tailored exercise, and supportive devices, many people are able to improve their daily functioning. The goal is not to completely immobilize joints, but to provide better support during movement.

Symptoms of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

Symptoms vary considerably from person to person. Many people experience excessive joint mobility combined with chronic pain. Fatigue, muscle pain, and a feeling of joint instability are also common. Even light physical activity may result in prolonged soreness or delayed recovery.

Characteristic Features of EDS

Unlike ordinary joint hypermobility, EDS causes structural instability. Joints are less stable and can move beyond their normal range of motion, a condition known as hyperextension. The skin may be softer or more fragile, and wound healing can be slower. Together, these characteristics increase the risk of joint overload and injury.

The Role of Compression and Braces in EDS

Many people with EDS find compression garments beneficial. Gentle compression provides continuous support and may improve body awareness, also known as proprioception. Better proprioception can improve movement control and may help reduce pain and fatigue.

Compression supports for the knee, shoulder, ankle, wrist, and elbow are commonly used during daily activities, work, or light exercise.

Back Support for EDS

For back pain and postural problems, a supportive back brace may provide relief. This is particularly relevant for lower back pain or reduced core stability. A lightweight or semi-rigid back brace provides additional trunk support, promotes better posture, and reduces strain on muscles and ligaments. With EDS, it is important that the brace offers support without completely restricting movement.

Elastic or semi-rigid back braces with compression and adjustable straps can provide support while standing, walking, and working. Examples include the E-life Advanced LumbarFit Back Brace and the Thuasne Lombacross Activity Back Brace.

Knee Support for EDS

The knee is one of the joints most frequently affected by EDS. Due to instability, the knee may feel unreliable or give way during movement. A knee brace can provide additional support and guidance while walking or exercising.

Depending on the severity of symptoms, a compression knee support may be suitable for mild instability, while a hinged knee brace may be recommended for more significant instability or recurrent sprains.

This can improve confidence during movement and help reduce the risk of injuries during activities such as climbing stairs, walking longer distances, or exercising.

EDS and Shoulder Problems

Shoulder complaints are common in people with EDS because weakened connective tissue reduces shoulder stability. Since the shoulder is naturally one of the body’s most mobile joints, it is more prone to instability and partial dislocations.

Many people experience a loose sensation, pain during everyday movements such as reaching or lifting, and muscle fatigue. The surrounding muscles compensate for the reduced joint stability, which can eventually result in overuse and persistent discomfort.

Treatment primarily focuses on improving stability through targeted exercises that strengthen the rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles. Avoiding excessive strain and moving more consciously are also important.

When additional support is required, a shoulder brace can be beneficial. Models such as the Bauerfeind OmoTrain Shoulder Brace and the Reh4Mat Shoulder Brace Pro can provide extra stability during daily activities, particularly for instability or recurrent subluxations.

EDS and Wrist Problems

The wrist is another joint that is frequently affected by EDS. Increased joint mobility often leads to instability, making the wrist less able to tolerate physical loads. This may cause pain, fatigue, and a greater risk of overuse injuries.

Symptoms commonly develop during activities such as typing, lifting, or supporting body weight with the hands. Tendon inflammation may also occur because the tendons have to compensate continuously for the lack of joint stability. Some people additionally experience tingling sensations or reduced grip strength.

Because the wrist ligaments provide less support in EDS, the joint can move more easily into extreme positions, increasing irritation of tendons and surrounding tissues.

Treatment focuses on reducing stress on the wrist while improving stability through specific exercises and activity modification. If symptoms worsen or persist, a wrist brace or splint may help provide rest and prevent further overload.

The Push Med Wrist Brace offers firm support while allowing functional hand movement. Rather than completely immobilizing the wrist, it controls movement, making it suitable for tendon injuries and overuse complaints.

The Össur Formfit Pro Wrist Brace provides excellent stability with a comfortable fit and is ideal when additional support is required during daily activities or recovery.

Braces as Part of a Comprehensive Treatment Plan

For people with EDS, braces should not be viewed as a stand-alone solution but as part of a comprehensive treatment approach. The right brace can help reduce pain, protect joints, and improve participation in everyday activities. The most suitable brace depends on your symptoms, the affected joint, and the degree of instability.

How should I package my product to return it? +

Use sturdy packaging, preferably the original shipping box in which you received your order. This minimizes the risk of damage and allows us to make someone else happy with the product. After it has been returned, the item must still be suitable to be offered as a new product.

Never use the product’s own packaging as the shipping box! If the product packaging becomes damaged, replacement costs may be charged.

What are the return conditions for returning a product? +

Return Conditions

  1. If reasonably possible, the product must be returned in its original condition and undamaged, in the most original and undamaged product packaging.
  2. It must be reasonably possible to resell your returned item without any additional handling.
  3. The product packaging may never be used as the shipping box. There must always be an extra outer shipping box around the product to prevent damage to the product and/or its packaging. You can use the shipping box we originally used to send the product to you.

How can I exchange my product for another product or size? +

Would you like to exchange the product for another size or a different product?
You can easily use our exchange service. Please follow the steps below:

  1. Go to our returns portal and indicate which product you would like to exchange.
  2. Next, select the size or the alternative product you would like to receive in exchange for your current product. For this step you will need your order number (including the letters ORD..) and your postal code. You can find these details on the packing slip.
  3. After you have indicated which product you would like to exchange and what you would like to receive in return, you can choose a return label from a carrier at a reduced rate.

Once you have purchased the return label, you will receive it by e-mail.

  • If you selected a printable return label, please print the label and attach it to the outside of the shipping box.
  • If you selected a non-printable return label, you do not need to print anything. Simply take your parcel to a parcel shop and have the QR code or barcode from the document in the e-mail scanned. The employee at the parcel shop will print the label for you and attach it to the box.

Important: always keep the drop-off receipt until your return has been fully processed. This serves as proof that you handed over the parcel.

Once we have received your return, we will process it as soon as possible (within a maximum of 5 working days). After processing your return, you will receive a new order confirmation containing the product you exchanged your original item for.

For the first exchange, no additional shipping costs will be charged. This order confirmation also confirms that your return has been successfully processed.

As soon as you receive this confirmation and the product is in stock (if a product is not in stock, it will be indicated with the word “backorder” on the product page), your order will be collected by the carrier the same day at 17:00 (5 PM).
