Do I have golfer’s elbow?
Elbow pain is common and is often associated with the sport of golf. But did you know that golfer’s elbow does not only affect athletes? People who frequently perform the same movements, such as typing, DIY work or lifting, can also develop these symptoms. In this blog, we explain what golfer’s elbow is.
Golfer’s elbow: pain on the inside of the elbow
Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) affects the inside of the elbow. This is where the flexor muscles of the wrist and fingers attach. Overloading these tendons can cause symptoms such as:
- Pain when gripping an object firmly
- Pain when bending the wrist
- Difficulty with everyday activities such as turning a key or carrying groceries

What can you do?
- Rest and adjust your movements: avoid movements that cause pain.
- Cold or heat therapy: this may temporarily relieve the pain.
- Braces or supports: an elbow brace can relieve pressure on the tendons and support recovery.
- Physiotherapy: focused on stretching exercises, strengthening the muscles and advice on preventing overuse.
How long does golfer’s elbow take to heal?
Recovering from golfer’s elbow takes time. On average, symptoms disappear within 3 to 12 months, provided you give the arm sufficient rest and the right support. For some people, symptoms persist for longer, sometimes for a year or more.
It is therefore important to take action in good time, such as avoiding overuse, wearing a brace or strap and, if necessary, undergoing physiotherapy. The sooner you address the problem, the greater the chance of a faster recovery.
Which braces provide support?
There are two types of braces that can provide support for golfer’s elbow. The main difference lies in the size and function of the product:
- Sleeves: provide general compression and support around the elbow. They often include a separate strap that can apply additional targeted pressure to the painful area.
- Braces and epicondylitis straps: apply targeted pressure to the muscle belly associated with the painful tendon attachment.

Frequently asked questions
Can I continue exercising with golfer’s elbow?
That depends on the severity of your symptoms. If the pain is mild, you can often remain active as long as you avoid movements that cause pain. If the pain is severe, it is better to stop temporarily. An elbow brace can help you gradually resume sports or work activities.
Does a brace really help with recovery?
Yes, an elbow brace or epicondylitis strap can relieve pressure on the tendons and support recovery. A brace is not a substitute for treatment, but it can make everyday activities easier to perform.
When should I see a physiotherapist?
If your symptoms persist for more than a few weeks or keep returning, it is advisable to consult a physiotherapist. They can support the recovery process with targeted exercises and advice.
