Neck brace or soft neckband for neck pain?
A sore neck can be very tedious and exhausting. Your neck complaints can have multiple causes, the best known of course being the whiplash and neck hernia. But an over-fatigue or (mild) injury of the neck muscles can of course also be the cause. Your neck muscles stabilize and steer your head, with every step and every move you make. An injury to these muscles is therefore very annoying. To properly support these muscles and your head, you can choose to (temporarily) buy a neck brace or soft neckband.

Soft neck brace: suitable for everyone?
As long as the size is correct, anyone can use neck braces or neck straps. The advice is to use a neck brace / neckband no longer than strictly necessary. Ask your treated specialist for advice. This is to prevent the neck muscles from becoming unnecessarily weak. In some cases, for example in degenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s, ALS or MS, it can sometimes be no more than wearing the neck brace / neck bandage for a long time to support the head and cervical vertebrae.
What conditions wear a neck brace?
Whiplash neck brace / neckband
Whiplash actually means ‘whiplash’ and occurs when your head suddenly moves back and forth with force. This allows the bands and muscles in your neck to stretch. This often occurs in accidents such as a rear-end collision. Every year, between 15,000 and 30,000 people in the Netherlands experience whiplash. A neck brace / neck bandage can provide support to support the neck muscles during strenuous activities during the first weeks. However, it is wise to reduce the use of the neckband within 3 to 4 weeks.
Neck hernia neck brace / neckband
As with a regular hernia (Hernia Nuclei Pulposi), a protrusion of the intervertebral disc can develop between the cervical vertebrae. This bulge can press on a nerve or on the spinal cord, causing pain symptoms. These pain complaints can manifest as neck pain or radiating pain in an arm, with or without loss of strength or loss of feeling. The latter depends on the location of the entrapment. A ‘regular’ (lumbar / lower back) hernia is 7 times more common than a neck hernia. Degenerative (muscle) diseases of neck brace / neckband
When one suffers from a degenerative disease whereby the neck muscles slowly become weaker or are less well controlled, a neck brace can offer a lot of relief and comfort. When the neck muscles constantly have to work maximally in order to be able to lift the head slightly, they are wrong. In addition, a neck brace can also ensure that the field of vision of the patient finally increases again because the head can finally be held upright again.
