Braces for Adults In and Around Water
There are special water-resistant braces suitable for adults to swim, shower, and use in other wet conditions. Read below to see which options are available and what to watch out for!
Can a brace withstand water?
Not every brace is suitable to wear in water. Most braces are made of materials such as plastic, Velcro, and sometimes metal. Some of these materials are water-resistant, but it’s important to know that not every brace is designed for use in water, swimming pools, or the sea. Especially Velcro and any foam or fabric padding may wear faster or work less effectively when often wet.
Medical advice: Braces with metal stays or non-waterproof fabric may cause irritation, rust, or skin issues due to moisture and bacteria. Hygiene is especially important if you have open wounds or eczema.
Can you swim with a brace?
The answer depends on the type of brace you wear. Most standard braces are advised to be removed while swimming. Reasons include:
- Water may damage the material or reduce the brace’s effectiveness.
- The brace may sag if fully soaked.
- Chlorine and salt water can damage the material, e.g., discoloration.
Some braces in our webshop are specifically designed for water use. They are often made of neoprene or other water-repellent materials and contain little or no metal. They are suitable for aqua therapy, swimming, hydrotherapy, showering, or jobs where the brace may get wet.
How to clean a swim brace?
Most braces can be washed, but it’s usually best with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Close Velcro straps before washing. Make sure the brace can dry completely before using it again. Always dry flat. To speed up drying, place it flat between two towels. Never use a dryer or heater. If your brace is not specifically made to get wet, minimize washing.
To wear the brace longer without washing, consider an undersleeve. This Ihle undersleeve is a soft layer that protects your skin. It’s also a good solution if you have allergies!
Are there braces you can wear while swimming?
Yes, there are braces specifically designed for water use for adults. In our webshop you will find various water-resistant braces for the ankle, knee, wrist/hand, and shoulder. These braces are ideal for swimming, wet jobs, or just showering. Examples include:

Medical benefits of swimming with a brace
Swimming is often recommended for conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatism, post-operative rehabilitation, tendon inflammation, instability, or muscle weakness. The buoyancy of water (hydrostatic pressure) relieves joints, making movement easier and less painful. At the same time, a water-resistant brace supports unstable joints, such as after an ankle or knee injury, without risk of damage.
- Hydrotherapy: Therapy in warm water to improve strength and mobility. Especially effective during rehabilitation after injuries, for neurological conditions (such as MS or stroke), or joint complaints. A brace provides extra stability for safer, more confident movement. [1]
Medical advice: Swimming is not recommended with active inflammation, open wounds, acute trauma, or infections—even with a brace.
